Resetting a Diamond in an Heirloom Ring

Vanessa Simmons asked:

There are instances when you may want to reset the diamond in an old ring. Maybe it was a ring that has been passed down from generation to generation, or maybe it was a ring that was purchased at an antique shop or at an estate sale. Your reasons for resetting the diamond may vary depending on the origin of the engagement ring.

Changing An Engagement Ring Setting

How or why you choose to change the setting is very personal and will likely vary based on your sentimental attachment to the ring. If it was a wedding ring that has been passed down in the family you may not want to change the look of the ring too much. But if it was a vintage ring purchased somewhere like an antique store you might have less attachment and instead you may have some creative ideas of how to modify it to fit your style.

Some women, who keep the diamond wedding ring after a divorce, want to use the diamond for a new piece of jewelry. It can be used to make a pendant or something else that looks very different from the original piece of jewelry.

Creating A New Look

After some careful thought you can figure out how to improve the look of the ring and design it to fit your style. In some cases this may mean making it more functional for your lifestyle and in other cases it may be to improve the appearance of the diamond.

If you have an active lifestyle or you work with your hands a lot you may want to take a ring with a high setting and lower it so your ring doesn’t get in the way as much and bump against things so easily.

If the diamond already has a bit of a yellow tone you might want to remove it from a gold setting and set it in silver or platinum instead to reduce the yellowish look.

If you want a little color in your engagement ring you may want to add your birthstone or other gemstones, like sapphires, to the setting.

If the diamond has a noticeable flaw or slight damage you may want to set it in a way where it is less noticeable or more protected.

Considerations And Questions

It is important to find someone you trust to reset your diamond. Ask friends and family if they have had experience with a trusted jeweler. Look for someone who gives you a detailed explanation of the resetting process and someone who can help you determine the best look.

To help you find a qualified jeweler there are some questions you should ask. Ask for examples of their work and references. Ask about the certification level of the person who will be doing the work. Make sure they are insured for theft and other forms of loss to protect your diamond. And ask if the work will be done at that location; if it will be sent make sure you feel comfortable with their transportation process.

I’m helping my best friend’s boyfriend pick out an engagement ring for her. He really wants to get her an antique diamond ring, preferably from the 1920s, 30s, or 40s. We currently reside in Rhode Island but we’re definitely willing to travel a few hours - probably up to 4 - if anyone has a great suggestion! Thanks.

soldier96b asked:

I want to give my girlfriend a promise ring during/after her prom and would hate to mess up by putting it on the wrong finger. So does it go on the “wedding” finger like an engagement ring or a differnt finger. Also how do I go about finding her ring size? I don’t want to ask her because then she will get the hint. So how do i find out?
