What’s more important, the diamond or the ring itself?

diamond ring
Lisa G asked:

If you were buying a diamond ring, would you rather buy the perfect diamond and have it set, or find the perfect ring design and then get the diamond?
Perhaps I should clarify the question. I have a small jewelry shop and I’d like to take my business on-line. I have a great diamond supplier and I know I could offer diamonds at bargain prices. When designing the web site, I’m not sure if someone would prefer to shop for a diamond first, or for the ring first. Generally speaking, in my shop, I find that if it’s the man buying the ring, he wants the best quality diamond he can afford. If it’s the woman, she wants a certain style of ring, then she’ll get the diamond that compliments that ring. However, that’s just in my area. I don’t know what the rest of the world prefers.

  1. The perfect ring then have a diamond set. That’s what we did.

  2. ring. the diamond should compliment the setting and style of the ring.

  3. neither. it doesn’t matter what it looks like.as long as it’s given with love from the person that I’m planning on getting married to.

  4. It depends on the occasion. If I were just buying a diamond ring as a present I’d go with the nicest diamond I could afford. If it was an engagement or wedding ring I’d still get a nice diamond but the ring is more important as it is the ring that is the symbol.

  5. theres places you can do both

  6. The ring is meaningless unless the commitment is perfect.
People are imperfect, as are diamonds and rings; but commitment can outlast the hardest material known to huMan.

  7. the ring is more important

  8. does it really matter if it has a diamond the most important thing is that you love eachother even if you just have a plain ring!! in the olden day they just had plain rings without diamonds

  9. Neither … the man behind the ring is the most important thing.

  10. find the perfect ring then find the diamond but if a loved one is getting it for you you should just be thankful that they love you enough to buy you one

  11. neither the most impoprtant thing is the love and respect of the person giving the ring

  12. You really need to have both.
An inperfect diamond would make the set less than satisfactory. A perfect setting (set) would make not be any good with a bad diamond. I have been engaged for about 3 months now and absolutely love my ring. My fiancee’ spent about 3 months picking it out.
He is telling me now that a quality diamond is definately needed. He suggests. VS1, G or H…. Get what carat size fits your budget.
He says the most important thing is to make sure there is no visible inclusions in the diamond and that it does not have any yellow tint.
He bought mine on bluenile.com and got a great deal!!
    Hope this helps

  13. find the diamond & have it set

  14. If you are referring to an engagement ring, neither. It is the love that it is given with that matters most.

  15. I perfer a very simple setting to show off a perfect diamond. I have a three stone ring and each diamond is nearly flawless (D, VVS2 for the center stone and two D, VS1 side stones).

  16. simple setting, gorgeous diamond. I love diamonds!!!
But the ring has to compliment the diamond.
    Good luck

  17. I guess I am the typical guy. I found the diamond and then let my wife set it locally.

I bought online and wasn’t worried about the setting, but I knew my wife wanted a simple 6 prong setting. She didn’t want to distract from the diamond. The diamond was about 20x the price of the setting.

I think there are site that allow you to choose diamond or setting first. I didn’t buy from, but you may want to check the site out.
