In the diamond ring business, do the consumers get what they pay for?
Chris m asked:
What I meant was this: When buying diamond (engagement ring), can I go to any store and pretty much get what I paid for? You know, the saying,”you get what you paid for”.

places that have sales that say 30-40-50% off are probably not good… look for a place that sells loose diamonds and also has settings for sale…

I’d stick to the chain stores (Kay’s) or a reputable jeweler who has been around for a while.
Also, get an appraisal, if the ring costs more than you could afford to lose get insurance on it,like,. right away.
Goo luck.

unfortunately, no. There are too many uneducated or unscrupulous jewelers out there (mainly in those “established” chain mall stores) that will sell cheap stones at a high mark up to maintain profit margins. If you want to get the best deal for your money, go only to an AGS certified Jeweler… they are governed under a strict system of ethics - most jewelers don’t qualify to be a member, so it says a lot when one gets accepted.
and remember, diamonds will never resell for what you paid. It just doesn’t happen.

It’s still worth shopping around. How good a rings looks is subjective. Sure, how many carats it is isn’t, but you can still find a good deal, especially from a reputable retailer. See
