my boyfriend gave me a promise ring but didn’t ask my parents.. no big deal… and then when he proposed he asked my parents first.

a promise ring is something just between the two of you .. he is promising that someday he will commit to you. He doesn’t have to get your parents permission to do that.

I think it would be the honorable thing to do, yes. And it would show them that he has good character, and that his intentions are right.

If its not an engagement ring then no I don’t think he should. If my bf asked my dad permission to give me a promise ring I think he’d say something like “Come back when your really ready to take her off my hands!”

That depends of your cultural background or if your parents make a big deal of it. Otherwise, I don’t see why he should do it. That’s your life after all!

no, not for a promise ring. Really, he doesn’t need to for engagement, but it can be nice. Mine didn’t ask my dad before he proposed. It’s not my dad’s decision it’s mine, and I have always hated the idea of not being able to be the one to tell my parents. Why should they get to know before I do? I want the joy of telling them myself. lol.
Anyways, for a promise ring NO!

engagement may be different, although that is now considered old-fashioned.
