Diamond engagement ring has black mark inside, why?
Slappy White asked:
I purchased a $3000 3/4 ct diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend in September from a jewelry store chain that is very reputable. Over the last month we’ve noticed a tiny black mark inside of the diamond, only noticeable from the sides, not on top. We took it back there and the lady said this is a normal characteristic of a real diamond and that sometimes this just happens. It proves the diamond is real. Anyone ever heard of this?

That lady lied to you, I have one and it doesn’t have a black mark.

You got jugged. It’s an impurity. Diamonds that are impure are cheaper, and contain more junk in them. Take it to be appraised by another jeweler and see if you got ripped off.

It is a real diamond but it is a very low quality

That’s called an inclusion and yes diamonds have them.
They should have told you it had one and if you can see it with your eye and if the ring really cost you $3k then you WAY over paid for it.
They really riped you off big time. DId you get a card with it that shows its grade? (color, cut etc.)? if so post the numbers and letters.
you should have paid AT MOST $1,200 for an I1 diamond

No!! I am a girl and know alot about diamonds. That diamond must not be real then. It is totally unnatural a diamond that has a black spot on it. WEIRD!!! I say return it and buy a different one for your girlfriend. RI PP OFF!

Only another jeweler will know and tell you the truth. I would only show up and ask for an appraisal and not tell the story - this way, it won’t be a competition between retailers. Good Luck!

Sarajane 1 has it right. It sounds like you got taken there. It’s probably a real diamond, but a poor quality one. Take it to another jeweler and have them appraise it, to see if you overpaid by a lot. Did they give you any paperwork with it that tell you about the quality? Any good jeweler will. The paperwork will tell you exactly what impurities are in your diamond.

No, the woman is lying to you. It sounds like the diamond is not real. That woman doesn’t even know what she’s talking about.
24. August 2008 at 3:51 pm :
Yes, I had one like that. Had carbon in it.
27. August 2008 at 6:09 pm :
That black spot is called an inclusion. It is a flaw within the stone… My friend has a beautiful diamond ring and it also has the black spot.. It is very small but still there. It is 1 carat and cost her 1000.00. I would have it appraised by another jewler and I also would not let them know about the inclusion.

If the diamond is certified, you have a right to have it replaced with the proper color and clarity stone. If you did not buy a certified diamond, you got took and you don’t really have any recourse that I am aware of.
For future reference only buy certified;
Vs2 or better quality and J or better color.
A small quality diamond is of much greater class ,than a cheap(I don’t mean price) diamond that is huge.

It confirms the authenticity of the diamond. It is carbon deposited naturally by nature. Although its good that your diamond is real, we still prefer a flawless diamond-meaning no marks, inclusions or imperfection.
31. August 2008 at 3:09 am :
It is a real diamond, it’s just the worst clarity quality anytime you can see flaws with the naked eye.
3/4 diamond at 3k sounds like a rip off, but without knowing the color and cut…even then sorry to say it sounds like you could’ve done much better for 3k.
2. September 2008 at 1:47 pm :
yes, it is called carbon, it is part of the rock that the diamond develops in. it is normal. the more oyu see in the diamond thoough makes it less valuable. I dont think you got a very good deal on your ring if you paid $3000 and it has a large enough peice of carbon that you can see it with the naked eye
2. September 2008 at 10:14 pm :
it IS a diamond, but not a good quality one, sorry… they look like that when they are low grade…
take ‘em to court!
5. September 2008 at 2:51 am :
You got jipped buddy. It may be a real diamond but is not a flawless cut and is likely not a pure diamond. What you may be seeing is bits of carbon inside. Sorry You might go to the store and ask for the quality rating. It is likely real, but not worth the 3 grand ya shelled out for it.
6. September 2008 at 5:50 pm :
It’s a carbon mark, for sure it is a real diamond. To assuage your suspicions, pay to have it appraised at another jewellers - and get the list of specifications from the ring you bought to compare it to the appraisal.
9. September 2008 at 9:03 am :
The black mark is carbon its also nown as a flaw, becareful when you buy the next one and take or borrow a loop to look through for flaws. If you think its not real take it to a local pawnshop and they can test right in front of you,
11. September 2008 at 6:23 am :
It’s a flawed diamond.
12. September 2008 at 8:47 am :
The diamond is real but it is not the best quality. You might have paid too much for the ring. However the setting also plays a role in the price, if it is platinum, custom made or has additional stones then even though it is a 3/4 carat less than perfect diamond, the price might be justified.
