What was your experience with a promise ring?

promise ring
greenisgoodbitch asked:

(Giving or receiving?)

ALSO, do promise rings typically have diamonds? How large/small? I’m just wondering…because I always imagined them to not have diamonds for some reason.

  1. I received a diamond promise ring with a little .25 carat diamond in it when I was 16, back in 1987. Then I grew up, and got a real diamond engagement ring.

  2. i never understood why you would give your girlfriend a promise ring

what is the promise? i promise to get you a bigger diamond later?

isn’t an engagement ring THE promise ring??

  3. It was kind of silly lol

We wanted to both get promise rings because we were going to wait a while before we got engaged..

then about a 3 months after that, we decided why wait? We’re ready, we can financially stand on our own two feet..why not? So it was a bit of a waste. Luckily, one of the small diamonds fell out.. so the jewelry store let us exchange it for an engagement ring (we paid the difference) I guess in the end it all worked out :)
And it depends on what you like..some have very small diamonds, others dont. I think that’s up to personal taste :)

  4. My husband gave me a promise ring when I was 18. Mine it a band with 14 little diamonds in it. I love it and I still where it. I don’t like the ones that look like a mini engagement ring. They tend to look cheesy.

But yes, they do usually have diamonds in them. It doesn’t have to though, it the symbolism that is important.

We waited 5 years to get married, so I guess he was just “promising” that he would be with me and marry me someday, but that we were too young at the time.

  5. When I was 13 my ex-boyfriend gave me a promise ring. We married 4 years later, divorced 2 years later.

When I met my (now)fiance he gave me a promise ring a year into the relationship telling me when I was ready (I was having a lot of mixed feelings about marrying again)and that he’d wait for me. And he did!

  6. My now fiance gave me a promise ring on our 1 year anniversary of dating. It’s a 1/4 ct and 10 kt gold. Cheap, about $150. He got it for me because I was only 17, and we were nowhere near ready to be getting engaged, but we were serious about each other. I feel they are good for younger couples, kind of cheesy for older people though. I wear my promise ring on my right hand, and I now have a beautiful engagement ring on my left hand now!

  7. None I have a wedding ring

  8. I have a cute little story about my promise ring :D
In May, my husband bought me a promise ring, promising that one day we would get married and be together forever. Well, he flew from Texas to Oregon ( where I lived at the time ) and we spent two weeks together. In that two weeks, he gave me the ring. We were not planning on getting married for some time.. like a year or so… But then when he had to leave back to base in Texas, we didn’t realize it would be so hard saying goodbye… So after a few days of him being gone, my promise ring quickly turned into an engagement ring :D He proposed to me over the phone and it was so cute. . . . . Then, in August, he flew to Oregon where we got married in the courthouse. Now my promise ring/engagement ring is my wedding ring. hehe its cute. we just dont have the money to get me a flashy huge ring so im wearing a half carat diamond ring.

This is my ring in case anyone cares :D

  9. My boyfriend gave me a promise ring before he went away to college. I thought it was really cute.

Here is a picture of it:**?m=1&g=2

  10. I didn’t have a promise ring…I wore my ex’s high school ring until I traded it in for the engagement ring.

With my second marriage he gave me a beautiful custom made bypass with our birthstones entwined and round diamonds accents…..I wasn’t ready to say yes so we made that a ‘promise’ ring, then an engagement ring when I was finally sure. Good luck

BTW he told me if I decided not to accept his proposal he still wanted me to keep the ring…because I was already his best friend….now how’s that for a great guy…..

  11. i have a plain white gold promise ring

  12. When I was 16, my bf and I exchanged promise rings that we made (we were both in a jewelery class together so we used one of the assignments to make each other promise rings with stones that we hand-polished and sized and set, etc. It was really romantic actually).

And….about 6 months later we were broken up, I had a new bf to whom I’m now married to, and my ex is still single and stupid.

But that had nothing to do with the rings.

A promise ring can be whatever you want, look however you want, etc. If you want a ring with diamonds, then get a ring with diamonds (most people will assume you are engaged though)

  13. a promise ring can be anything. diamond or no diamond.
mine does have a teeny tiny diamond. its probably 1/10th

  14. My very first love gave me a promise ring with two little bitty teeny tiny pieces of diamond dust when I was 16. Gosh I thought he was the only guy in the world. About 6 months later, he said I was moving too fast for him and broke it off with me. then he started dating my younger sister! My wonderful husband and I have matching golden engraved bands. It’s the only ring he has ever given to me and we have been wearing them for 30 years!
I think promise rings are fine for young people who are serious about each other, but just a bit too young for an actual engagement ring.

  15. i have a promise ring and it does not have diamonds. i think diamonds are for the wedding day.

  16. My boyfriend got me a promise ring for Christmas last year that matched the necklace that he got me for my birthday. It has two real ruby hearts with small diamonds on the band. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

    This is it -

  17. mine wasn’t a diamond but it was really pretty. but i have to say my experience is good because now we are engaged and getting married in April/May
